The richest black men in the world are men of extraordinary wealth, and influence. This list unites black people regardless of nationality, and makes them part of a central economic community. While there are about 2,000 billionaires in the world; only 15 to 20 of them are black.

Of that figure; about half are based on the continent; the other half being African- Americans. This fine balance shows that despite their widely different circumstances, Black people are developing at roughly the same pace all over the world.

Perhaps the very fact that there are black billionaires at all will serve as inspiration to young black people across the world; motivating them to excel in their various fields of endeavor.

Aliko Dangote

Net worth: $13.5 billion

Aliko Dangote has been the poster boy for wealth in the black community for many years. He was born in 1957, in Kano State, Nigeria. Aliko Dangote follows a long family tradition of business; his father and uncle were both wealthy businessmen, and his grandfather Sanusi Dantata was the richest man in Nigeria.

His uncle gave him the seed capital for his business ventures, which was initially dealing in commodities such as rice, spices, and cereals. Dangote’s operations soon included bagging and packaging of said commodities, and soon he was able to monopolize the import and sales of some of these commodities.

Dangote soon expanded his empire into manufacturing; his company now makes granulated sugar, processed food such as noodles and macaroni, as well salt, and flour. Other products of the Dangote Group include fertilize, petroleum and construction.

Robert Smith

Robert Smith is an American billionaire businessman, philanthropist, and investor. He was born on December 1, 1962, in Denver, Colorado, USA. Both of his parents were schoolteachers, and he grew up in a middle-class neighborhood.

Robert Smith is a fine mix of talent and sheer will; while still in high school, he applied for an internship at Bell Labs but was declined because the program only accepted college students. He demonstrated his will by persisting with phone calls every Monday for 5 months until circumstances shifted in his favor, and he was accepted. While at Bell Labs, he again demonstrated his talent by developing a way of testing semi conductors before engaging them.

He worked at several companies before establishing Vista Equity Partners; which has 500 members of staff, and which has been in existence since the year 2000. The company is also involved in some charitable work.

Abdul Samad Rabiu is a Nigerian businessman. He is one of the biggest industrialists in Nigeria, and one of the richest black men in the world.  AbdulSamad Rabiu was born on the 4th of August, 1960 in Kano, Nigeria.

His father Khalifah Isyaku Rabiu was a big businessman; he was a trader and industrialist. AbdulSamad Rabiu went to Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, USA, but returned to Nigeria immediately afterwards to take over the reins of his father’s business.

Abdulsamad Rabiu transformed that family business into the BUA Group; which is one of the biggest conglomerates in Nigeria. the company produces steel, flour, cement, rice, industrial chemicals, fertilizers, and edible oils.

Mike Adenuga

Net Worth: $6.1 billion

Mike Adenuga is one of the richest men in Nigeria and Africa. He was born on the 29th of April 1953 to a Nigerian school teacher, and his trader wife. Mike Adenuga famously sold snacks to school mates, and worked as a taxi driver to fund his University Education.  

Mike Adenuga became a millionaire in his 20’s by selling clothing and soft drinks. From the proceeds of his trading ventures he went on to establish an oil exploration company, and fortunately, he struck oil in Southern Nigeria.

Having established himself in the oil trade he turned his attention to communication. He established Globacom in 2003, and now the company is one of the biggest telecommunications companies in Nigeria; and has operations in other African countries.

David Steward

Net worth: $5.8 billion

David L. Steward is one of the biggest African-American businessmen. He was born July 2, 1951, to the family of a mechanic, and his homemaker wife.

He attended Central Missouri State University, soon found himself working different jobs in companies such as Wagner Electric, Missouri Pacific Railroad Company, and then Federal Express.

He established World Wide Technology (WWT) a company which works in the areas of cell phone carrier networking, cloud computing, computer security, data analytics, artificial intelligence, computer networks, software development, and consulting services.

WWT is one of the biggest black owned companies; it employs 7000 people, and has revenue amounting to 13.4 billion dollars.

Arthur Eze

Net worth: $5 Billion,

Arthur Eze is a Nigerian billionaire businessman. He was born on the 27th of November 1948, in Ukpo, Dunukofia LGA, in Anambra State, Nigeria.   

Arthur Eze is the Founder and Chairman of Atlas Oranto Oil Company, one of Africa’s largest indigenous oil companies. The company has operations in several African countries such as Equatorial Guinea, Uganda, Sudan, South Sudan, Senegal, and Zambia, as well as Sao Tome and Principe.

Arthur Eze is a known Philanthropist; he has made several generous donations across Africa; especially in the area of education.

Cletus Ibeto

Cletus Ibeto is a Nigerian business magnate. He was born on the 6th of November 1952, in Nnewi, in Anambra State, Nigeria. Cletus Ibeto was apprenticed as a spare parts dealer, and started out in a small shop in Lagos. He spread his business; establishing bases in other locations in West Africa, before expanding into heavy truck engines.

From there Cletus Ibeto diversified his business into sealed lead batteries for cars and trucks; he established the manufacturing plant in Nigeria.

Cletus Ibeto then entered into the oil business by establishing Ibeto Petrochemical Industries which makes oil based lubricants as well as other petroleum derived products. The Ibeto Group owns and operates the tank farm for the storage of petroleum in Nigeria. It is a 60,000 metric tonne facility located at Apapa Wharf and Ibru Jetty Complex, Lagos.

Cletus Ibeto entered the American Oil market by purchasing Century Petroleum Corporation; a publicly-traded petroleum exploration and production company in the United States.

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah Winfrey is the richest, and most influential black woman in the world. She was born on January 29, 1954, to a single mother who was also a teenager, and who struggled from month to month to survive. Nevertheless, she grew up to become a very capable and ambitious young lady.

At 17 years of age she started working in a grocery store. Still in her teenage years, during college she won a beauty pageant, and that opened the door for her to work part time as a news-caster in the local radio station.

After college she landed an opportunity to work as a television presenter. She showed promise with her passion and oratorical presentations, and she was able to negotiate ownership of her TV Show. That immediately made her a millionaire.

For 25 years The Oprah Winfrey Show was broadcast across American Television, and still holds the record as the highest-rated television program in history. Her Book Club became an import launch-pad for writers, and she inspired many talk show hosts working today.

Patrice Motsepe is South Africa’s richest black man. He was born on 28 January 1962, in Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria, South Africa. He was born into the family of a schoolteacher who later became a businessman. He studied at the University of Swaziland, and then the University of the Witwatersrand.

He then became a partner at a law firm which was engaged in contracts for mining companies. This work exposed him to the field of mining, and he soon established his own mining company.

Today, his company African Rainbow Minerals is one of the biggest mining companies in South Africa; with about 24,016 employees, and R9.6 Billion in revenue.

Kanye West

Kanye West is the richest black man in music all over the world. He was born on June 8, 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S. he is known as a rapper, record producer, entrepreneur, and fashion designer.

Kanye West started out as a producer for Roc A Fella records. He first announced his abilities by producing many of Jay Z’s songs which were well received by the rap aficionados around the world.

The next step was to promote himself as a rapper; his first album The College Dropout (2004) was a resounding success; and announced his arrival as a rapper per excellence. He immediately established GOOD Music- his record label.

Kanye West went on to design shoes, which were made and sold first by Nike, and later by Adidas. He has also designed clothes which have been made and sold by Louis Vuitton, The Gap, and A.P.C.
