How To Make Chicken Feed (Cheap But Good)

Poultry farming can be boosted significantly by making chicken feed at home rather than buying from markets, stores, or other sources. Keeping chickens has become a popular practice, although not a new one. Humans have kept chickens since around 8,000 years ago.

Even in those early times, keeping chickens included feeding them as they would have been domesticated without luring them with food.

Chickens can eat almost anything. However, in order to bring the best results, they have to be fed certain feeds which will boost egg production, meat production, or enhance quick growth. Depending on the purpose for which the chickens are kept; there may be small variations to the feed.

How To Make Feed (Poultry)

Making chicken feed for poultry only requires that the proper ingredients be mixed together and ground. This is exactly how big industries make theirs, which they now package and sell. The ingredients are readily available; even when one ingredient is not available, there is always a local substitute.

Grinding the ingredients together makes the feed. However there should be some quantity measurements, otherwise the feed will have plenty of some food classes, and very little of others. There has to be a formula.

Chicken Feed Formula

The formula should contain good quantities of all the essential classes of food.

Carbohydrates (20%)

Lysine (7%)

Crude Protein (16.5%)

Methione (2%)

Crude fat (3%)

Cruder fibre (5%)

Calcium (3.5%)

Interestingly, one does not have to follow the said formula so strictly; as long as the food classes are complete, the results should be comparably good. What is left now is to understand what food sources can provide the nutrients as required. That means what materials should one put together?

Materials For Chicken Feed

Ingredients that are used in preparing poultry feed include Maize, Bajra, Deoiled Rice Bran, Rice Polish, Deoiled Ground Nut Extraction (Peanuts), Jowar (or sorghum, or millet) , Soybean, Deoiled Sunflower, Deoiled Rapesead, Fish Meal, Meat & Bone Meal, Shells (sea shells), and Marble Powder.

Sometimes one or two of the above ingredients may not be available. However, for the feed to be effective, it needs to have the necessary food classes.

Cereal Grains (Carbohydrates)

Cereal grains give the poultry birds energy; the main sources of this include maize, rice bran, jowar (or millet, or sorghum), Wheat, and barley.

Whichever one of the above food items that is readily available should be used; the goal is to bring down expenses as much as possible.

Protein

Protein is essential for growth and sustenance of the poultry. It occurs both in foods that are of plant or animal nature. Protein may occur with lysine. Some sources of protein for chicken feed include; Fish meal, soybean meal, peas, beans, lupine, rapeseed. Fish meal can be bought or prepared; it should be dried fish. As always, it is best to go for whatever is available; this will help bring down the costs of making the feeds.

Calcium

The next major thing to include in the feed formulation is calcium. Calcium is essential for bone growth, and also for egg production. Interestingly, egg shells can be a source of calcium. However, seashells are the most commonly used sources.

This is one of the items that has to be ground up to a fine powder.

Now to the measurements and procedure:

In a bucket or any other container measuring around 5 liters, put in a mixture of any of the materials for carbohydrates nearly reaching half of the container. That is about 2 liters.

Then put in another mixture for protein which will be an equal measure to the one for carbohydrates. That is also about 2 liters.

Finally, the mixture for calcium should be measure 1 liter. However, it should not be put in with the previous too mixtures yet.

The mixture of carbohydrates and proteins should be ground up to small pellets. Please ensure that it does not become too fine. The calcium is to be ground up separately, it should be as fine as power.

The mixtures can then be put together in a container, and mixed thoroughly.

How To Make Feed For Broilers

Because broilers are kept to gain weight for slaughter as soon as possible, they are typically fed with high protein concentrates to help them grow fast, and add meat.

Feed for broilers still require the same materials as described above, but there may be small changes, especially in the ratios or quantities of the materials.

Some of the materials for broiler feeds include;

Carbohydrates: Corn, millets, sorghum, rice bran.

Protein: Soybean meal, alfafa seeds, de-oiled groundnut seeds, Fish meal.

Calcium and other vitamins/minerals mix.

Measurements and procedure:

The carbohydrates should make up about 40% of the feed. That means a 5 liter container should have carbohydrates almost reaching the 2 litre mark.

The proteins should be almost equal or slightly more than the carbohydrates; in a 5 liter container, the proteins can be 2.5 liters.

That should leave about 0.5 liters of space, which can now be made up with the mixture of calcium, limestone, and vitamins and minerals.

As always, the calcium/minerals mixture should be grounded separately. The first two mixtures should be grounded into small particles, but not too tiny. On the other hand, the calcium/minerals should be grounded completely, until it becomes like powder.

Everything should be put in a 5 liter container, and mixed thoroughly. That is how you make poultry feed for broilers.

The process (and measurements) can be repeated as many times as needed, and the feed can also be sold to other farmers. The feed mixture should be stored in a cool, dry place.
